Achieving Bold Goals is the practice of overcoming multiple hard challenges in concert with other people.
And bold goals by their very nature involve things which are uncertain, unclear and lacking a defined pathway.
Take the combination of Uncertainty + Other People and conflict is 100% guaranteed.
What is not guaranteed is the resolution of that conflict. That is optional.
Optional because it requires paying attention to a set of tools that can be used involving reflection, understanding and thinking and acting differently.
Let me ask you a question.
How much effort and energy have you put into developing skills and tools to understand how you can better navigate conflict?
I have one idea to share today. And it’s this. I think so many people have unresolved conflict because there’s a human trait that assumes that other people see the world the same way that we do.
We don’t. We all have our unique filter and experiences that shapes how we see things.
The only way to understand others better is to be curious, to ask questions - both of ourselves and others.
A simple tool I use in talks to expose this difference is what I have called the Past Present Future questions.
“Of 100% of your time, effort and energy what % goes to the future, the past and the present”.
Every room of people I’ve ever spoken to shows massive variation in this.
Try it for yourself. Ask others.
There’s so many applications of this insight, but for the context of resolving conflict, I use a set of hats to get people aligned in their thinking and as a path to better decision making.
Here’s 3 experiments to try with this:
2 Min Experiment
Ask yourself: Of 100% of my time, effort and energy what % goes to the future, the past and the present?”
Notice where you tend to focus.
5 Min Experiment
Ask someone else the same question. Notice the differences and reflect what impact that has on how you interact.
